People and Places - Castleshaw Valley Heritage Trail 1

The Castleshaw Valley has been a focus for people living off and working on the land for thousands of years. The people are central to the character of the Valley. Who were these people? What were they like? What were they doing here?

Prehistoric sites demonstrate the appeal of the area from earliest times. The Valley is then settled by the Romans, and in the Medieval era Castleshaw and the surrounding settlements are connected by the hollow way. Small settlements such as Bleak Hey Nook developed around an industrial function, and the reservoir demonstrates the importance of the Valley for large adjacent settlements like Oldham.
