Wool and Workshops - Castleshaw Valley Heritage Trail 2

For hundreds of years the woollen trade was the mainstay of the Castleshaw Valley. Find out how wool provided a good living for the people, and how it has left its mark on the landscape and its buildings.

The Castleshaw Valley environment provided ideal conditions for sourcing and producing wool. The Valley played a significant role in the development of the woollen trade during post-medieval and industrial times. The farms here produced wool and housed the workshops where the wool was processed and the families who worked here. The transport routes provided a means by which goods could be transported to market. The people of the Valley made their living from the woollen trade and in turn the Valley was characterised by it.
